A golf simulator is an indoor system that measures a real golf shot and recreates its flight on screen. You hit an actual ball into a projection screen; sensors capture the ball and club at impact, calculate the physics, and render where the shot would have gone on a virtual course. Modern units measure to within a few tenths of a mile per hour.
The three parts of a simulator
- The launch monitor — the sensor that measures the shot. This is where accuracy lives and where the cost sits.
- The enclosure — impact screen, hitting mat, and netting.
- The software — course library, shot tracing, and stat tracking.
How the measurement actually works
There are two approaches. Camera-based (photometric) units, like the Foresight Falcon we use, photograph the ball and clubhead at impact at very high frame rates and measure ball speed, launch angle, spin axis, club path and face angle directly. Radar-based units track the ball through the air using the Doppler effect and infer club data from flight. Camera systems are generally preferred indoors, where there isn’t enough ball flight for radar to observe.
What it can tell you
Ball speed, launch angle, back and side spin, carry and total distance, club head speed, smash factor, club path, and face angle at impact. Together these explain why a shot did what it did — the practical value over a driving range, where you only see the outcome.
Is it accurate?
Good commercial units are accurate enough that tour players use them for gapping and equipment fitting. The main variables are calibration, ball quality, and mat conditions. What a simulator can’t perfectly replicate is lie, slope and wind — which is why simulator scores tend to run a little lower than course scores.
Who it’s for
Winter practice, dialling in yardages, playing famous courses, lessons and fittings, and social rounds where the point is the company. You do not need to be a good golfer — most first-timers at Putter Sim Lounge have never used one.
